    U of I to lead two of seven new national AI institutes

    The University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign will lead two of seven new national artificial intelligence institutes, thanks to $40M in new funding from the National Science Foundation (NSF) and the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture. One will focus on AI in agriculture and the other will use AI in molecule-making.

    UIC engineers creating face shields to ease PPE shortage

    UIC Engineers designed a face shield made from thin plastic that could be manufactured at UIC’s Engineering Makerspace in 20 seconds to help ease a shortage of protective gear at UI Health.

    Waldrop selected for mission to investigate earth's atmosphere

    Lara Waldrop, Illinois ECE Assistant Professor and Y. T. Lo Fellow in Electrical and Computer Engineering, has been selected by NASA to develop a Solar Terrestrial Probes (STP) Science Mission of Opportunity, budgeted for $75 million.  Her mission, titled “Global Lyman-alpha Imager of the Dynamic Exosphere,”or “GLIDE” for short, was chosen for implementation after a competitive selection process and is expected to be launched in 2025.

    Discovery Partners Institute headquarters construction bids underway

    The University of Illinois System’s Discovery Partners Institute is one step closer to its permanent home with the announcement that the Illinois Capital Development Board is accepting bids for the construction project. A groundbreaking ceremony for the 1.5-acre site is scheduled later this year at The 78, Chicago’s 62-acre neighborhood on the Chicago River.

    UIC receives $40M donation, the largest single gift in school history

    The University of Illinois Chicago, Chicago’s only public research university, is the recipient of a $40 million donation from philanthropist and novelist MacKenzie Scott. It is the largest gift from an individual in school history.

    The IDEAS (Israel, Digital, Arts, Entrepreneurs, and Science) Immersion program connected five teams of entrepreneurs from Tel Aviv University (TAU) with leading Chicago investors, business founders and corporate executives, helping the Israeli entrepreneurs to grow their networks and refine their business plans over the two-week visit.

    David F. Merriman has been appointed interim director of the University of Illinois System’s Institute of Government and Public Affairs (IGPA), system Executive Vice President and Vice President for Academic Affairs Nicholas P. Jones announced today. Merriman is the James J. Stukel Presidential Professor of Public Policy, Management, and Analytics at the University of Illinois Chicago’s (UIC) College of Urban Planning and Public Affairs.
